Important: Understanding the Location When searching for accommodation, travelers often confuse the location of properties. Please note that the "Khuvsgul Lake Hotel" listed on many booking sites is actually located in Ulaanbaatar (the capital city), 900km away from the lake. Dalai Eej Resort is located inside the National Park, on the eastern shore near Khatgal, offering immediate access to the water and hiking trails.
Park Entry Fees & Permits To enter Khuvsgul Lake National Park, international visitors are required to pay an entrance fee at the park gate (located just past Khatgal village).
Cost: Approximately 10,000 MNT per car (subject to seasonal change).
Vehicle Permit: If you are driving a private vehicle, there is a small additional surcharge.
Documents: Keep your ticket handy, as rangers may check it at various checkpoints around the lake.
Wildlife & Nature The park is not just about the water; it is a thriving ecosystem.
Fish: The lake is home to the Lenok Trout and the endemic Khövsgöl Grayling. (Note: Fishing requires a permit).
Land Animals: The surrounding taiga forests are inhabited by Siberian ibex, argali sheep, and occasionally brown bears.
The Reindeer Herders: The Tsaatan (Dukha) people migrate through the western and eastern taiga. While some families move closer to the tourist camps in summer, authentic visits often require a guided horse trek deep into the mountains.
Best Time to Visit
July (Naadam Season): The warmest weather (15°C to 25°C), lush green pastures, and the peak of cultural festivals.
August: The water is warmest, making it ideal for kayaking and boat tours.
March (Ice Festival): The lake freezes completely, allowing for the famous Ice Festival, skating, and horse sleighs on the ice.
Getting Here Most travelers fly from Ulaanbaatar to Murun (approx. 1.5 hours). From the Murun airport, it is a scenic 1.5 to 2-hour drive across the steppe to reach the National Park gates and Dalai Eej Resort.
